Rhodium is available in the market through investment in mining companies and in the portfolio of certain exchange traded funds, but it always adds an element of risk. Portfolio managers who invest in rhodium are usually aggressively based and growth oriented. Also, with the use of rhodium in the catalytic converters of automobiles, its price does have an effect on the automobile induustry, and vice versa.

Since 1979, the automotive industry has emerged as the principal consumer of PGM. Palladium, platinum, and rhodium have been used as oxidation catalyst in catalytic converters to treat automobile exhaust emissions. A wide range of PGM alloy compositions is used in low-voltage and low-energy contacts, thick- and thin-film circuits, thermocouples and furnace components, and electrodes.

His procedure involved dissolving the ore in aqua regia, neutralizing the acid with sodium hydroxide (NaOH). He then precipitated the platinum metal by adding ammonium chloride, NH4Cl, as ammonium chloroplatinate. The element palladium was removed as palladium cyanide after treating the solution with mercuric cyanide. The material that remained was a red rhodium(III) chloride: rhodium metal was isolated via reduction with hydrogen gas.
